GTA 6's ESRB Rating, Explained

By Sihren · Published October 10, 2026 · 5 min read

Rockstar quietly added the ESRB rating badge to its official GTA VI page on October 1 — no press release, just the mark itself appearing where storefront listings pull their content information from. The rating: Mature 17+, with seven content descriptors. Here's what that actually means, point by point.

For context: these are the exact same seven descriptors the ESRB attached to GTA V in 2013. GTA 6 isn't rated more restrictively than its predecessor — it's rated identically.

The seven content descriptors

Blood and Gore

Depictions of blood or dismemberment beyond what a Teen rating allows.

Intense Violence

Realistic, sustained depictions of physical conflict — gunfights, melee combat, vehicular violence.

Mature Humor

Jokes and satire involving crude, sexual, or otherwise adult subject matter.

Nudity

Graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity.

Strong Language

Consistent use of profanity throughout, not occasional or mild.

Strong Sexual Content

Depictions of sexual material beyond suggestive themes — a step above "Sexual Content" alone.

Use of Drugs and Alcohol

Depiction or reference to illegal drug use and alcohol consumption.

Rockstar's page also lists an In-Game Purchases notice alongside the content descriptors — standard disclosure language rather than a rating descriptor itself, but worth knowing if you're budgeting beyond the base purchase price.

What Mature 17+ actually means

The ESRB's own guidance is that Mature-rated titles are generally suitable for players aged 17 and older. It's a voluntary industry rating, not a legally enforced age gate — US retailers generally honor it as store policy for in-person sales, but nothing technically stops a younger player from accessing the game at home, which puts the actual decision on parents rather than the rating itself.

Is GTA 6 appropriate for kids?

Given the rating is identical to GTA V's, the honest answer tracks with how most parents already think about that game: this isn't content built with younger teens in mind, and the "Mature Humor" and "Strong Sexual Content" descriptors in particular cover ground a Teen-rated game wouldn't touch. If GTA V wasn't something you were comfortable with a younger player having unsupervised access to, GTA 6 shouldn't be treated differently on the strength of this rating — it's the same bar, not a lower one.
